Couple's Impressive Self Reliant Life on a Remote Tropical Island – Off Grid Living
Marjo and An have an incredible off-grid homestead lifestyle in the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia. They've built their own home using locally sourced wood, they harvest fruit from the forest, they fish for their protein, they raise chickens for eggs and meat, and they also generate solar power, harvest rainwater, and use a well for their water and electricity. The island they live on does not have any villages or roads, so everything is transported with a small handmade boat, from their groceries to their fuel. It's not an easy lifestyle that they've chosen, but it is quite beautiful and rewarding (and they can surf from their front door!). You can follow and find out more about Marjo and An's incredible life on their YouTube channel, Our Island Life: https://www.youtube.com/@OurIslandLife https://www.instagram.com/marjos_stories/ Thanks for watching! ------------------------------------------------------------- STAY IN TOUCH! ------------------------------------------------------------- Website: www.exploringalternatives.ca Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/exploringalternativesblog Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/exploringalternatives/ ------------------------------------------------------------- COMMENTS ------------------------------------------------------------- We want our channel and comments section to be an inclusive space where everyone feels welcome to watch and contribute. An Architects Own Tiny House That Is Nestled in Secret Lanes of The City (House Tour)
Fitzroy Laneway House is an architects own tiny house grounded in foresight and malleability – attributes that an architect brings when designing their own home. Andrew Child of Andrew Child Architecture creates a family home designed with both the present and the future in mind that eloquently responds to its inner-city Melbourne location. Andrew was immediately drawn to the original home, which is one of five Victorian terrace homes in a historically rich street in Fitzroy – a vibrant locale with lots of old buildings mixed in with new pieces of architecture. The brief for an architects own tiny house was to create a residence that would accommodate Andrew and his family into the future and be open to change. “I also wanted something quite informal, that felt relaxed. We want to have fun here,” says Andrew. Fitzroy Laneway House is founded on the notion of connection to the site and the surrounding area. “I wanted the house to feel like a sanctuary, but I still wanted it to feel like we are connected to Fitzroy,” notes Andrew. As such, large windows offer views of the garden, neighbouring buildings and across rooftops. “If things change, like trees knocked down, we have installed shading blinds, timber screens, metal screen curtains, drapes and hanging planters, which all help with managing privacy while still making us feel connected to the locale,” says Andrew. The interior design of an architects own tiny house often reflects a considered, layered approach. Downstairs is a music studio currently used by Andrew’s son that can be entered from the courtyard, an outdoor oasis surrounded by greenery. Upstairs is a parents' retreat with a master bedroom, a study space and a hidden ensuite uniquely characterised by exposed brickwork. The back building houses an upstairs office with a bathroom and kitchen that could become a studio apartment for Andrew’s son or a completely separate tenancy. The furniture, décor and material palette are robust, imbuing an architects own tiny house with an informal and grounded feel. Recycled red brick dominates throughout, while crazy paving features inside and outside in the garden, complemented by concrete, internal timber cladding, stainless steel benchtops and steel joinery. Notably, green tiling features in the main bathroom, seamlessly blending with the greenery in the courtyard and beautifully counterbalancing existing brick and brass tapware. Fitzroy Laneway House is an architects own tiny house that speaks to the power of informal interior design, malleable planning and the beauty of blending the old and the new in a way that reflects a home’s locale. 00:00 - Introduction to the Architects Own Tiny House 01:32 - A Family Centred Brief 02:01 - A Walkthrough and the Layout of the House 03:18 - Integrating the Landscape and Exterior 03:50 - A Robust and Grounded Material Palette 04:54 - The Connected Design Approach For more from The Local Project: Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/thelocalproject/ Website – https://thelocalproject.com.au/ Print Publication – https://thelocalproject.com.au/publication/ Hardcover Book – https://thelocalproject.com.au/book/ The Local Project Marketplace – https://thelocalproject.com.au/marketplace/ To subscribe to The Local Project's Tri-Annual Print Publication see here – https://thelocalproject.com.au/subscribe/ Photography by Tom Ross. Why Japanese Live Longer
Get 10% off with my link on Squarespace - https://squarespace.com/paolofromtokyo I’m getting my Japanese Annual Health Check called Ningen Dock which got me wondering how Japan has the longest life expectancy in the world at 84 years old, only behind Hong Kong and Macau at 85 years. Interestingly, it wasn’t always the case as recently as the 1960’s where Japan had the shortest life expectancy out of the G7 countries. So as I get my Japan Health Check, I'll share some reasons why Japan was able to achieve a longer life expectancy over the years. But first, the Japanese Ningen Dock is Japan’s comprehensive health check system for early detection of disease broken down in 3 parts, early detection of cancer, detection of lifestyle related diseases and the confirmation of one’s health status. Ningen meaning person and dock, like a dockyard inspecting and repairing ships. In 1954, Japan established it’s first Ningen Dock day, and remember at that time, Japan had the shortest life expectancy of all the G7 countries, largely due to high mortality rates from cerebrovascular disease and stomach cancer. But over the last 60 years, Japan’s increased it’s medical level while also implementing a universal health insurance system to lower medical costs and developed a high standard of healthcare such requiring employers to pay for standard health examinations, Ippan Kenkou Shindan for their full-time employees or having more comprehensive paid examinations such as the Ningen Dock. All on top of promoting a traditional healthy diet leading to one of the longest average life expectancies in the world. How Tiny House Living Helped Them Onto The Real Estate Ladder!
A big thanks to Klook for sponsoring this video! To get started on your next adventure, visit https://www.klook.com and remember to use our promo code LIVINGBIG for a discount when booking your experience. It's been five years since we last visited Paul and Annett in their incredible off-the-grid tiny house on the Gold Coast and a lot has changed over the years. It's not often that we get to interview people who have been living in their tiny homes for this long and so it's wonderful to be able to share their inspiring story and see how off-grid tiny house living works in the long-term! You can see the first tour we filmed of their home here: https://youtu.be/83vzo2J09VM And our first revisit here: https://youtu.be/ZJ7ZihueEe0 Their home is looking wonderful and enjoys some new features and developments since we were last here. From the expanded solar system which now charges an EV, through to the now much-more established fruit trees, there is still a lot to love about this place. But what's even more special is the life-style and freedom that this home has provided Paul and Annett. With energy from solar (which now also powers their electric vehicle), rainwater collection, gas created by a bio-gas digester, and much of their food coming from the garden, their only real outgoings are modest rent and their food budget. The rest of their income (both of them now work from home) can go towards travel, their hobbies and has also allowed them to do something very cool! You'll have to watch the video to find out about that though! It was such a pleasure for us to visit this tiny home once again. We hope you enjoy the tour! Finding Freedom In The Most Spectacular Tiny House
Thanks to Roborock for sponsoring this video. Get yours on sale now for a 23% discount! Visit the Roborock Offical Store: https://bit.ly/4aZ48bK or find it on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3Wt7Zth If there are two concepts that perfectly sum up tiny house living for me, it’s freedom and resilience. The freedom to live a life of your choosing, liberating greater resources for life through choosing to live in a smaller, more manageable home with lower overheads. This in turn leads to resilience and greater ability to weather storms when they come our way, whatever form those storms may take. Nilamani’s tiny house is a perfect example of this, executed with a tremendous amount of style. This is her dream, forever tiny house and it shows. The design is exceptional, accentuated through the way she has beautifully decorated her home. We hope you enjoy the tour of this stunning tiny house.
